Protecting and administering the heritage of cultural history in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais coal-field
After 1981, the government of André Mauroy softened repercussions of the mine closures decided upon for northern France by means of economic and social measures. This was one side of the region's history. The other side was the preservation of industrial artefacts. However, which of these were to be preserved as significant, informative evidence of the industrial past? The article deals with the measures as well as the proportions and distribution of the protected artefacts, including the classification and entering in the list of historic monuments of coal-mining in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais coal-field.
