The heritage of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais coal-field
The Nord-Pas-de-Calais coal-field is an extensive region characterized by widespread distribution of artefacts from intensive industrial activity in an otherwise little developed, tendentially rural environment. As an organic, generally valid structure, the entire region possesses a comprehensively functioning system in technical, economic and social respects that was inseparably linked with mining through three centuries. Its effects are comprehensible in the physical and historical context throughout a long period. The article lays out the heritage of mining history of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region taking into account the aspects of the history of technology, society and culture.
