The Nord-Pas-de-Calais coal-field - geological aspects
The deposits of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais coal-field are in their dimensions a unique geological formation lying completely underground and, as a consequence of mining activity, support a densely built-up area of European dimensions. Originally it was a segment of a mountain-chain front that was formed about 300 million years ago which includes the mined coal deposits from America through to Asia, thus incorporating also Europe. Mining of the deposits initially was carried out without any specific knowledge of the deposit, but it contributed decisively to the development of the worldwide knowledge of coal and its deposits. Today, the Nord-Pas-de-Calais coal-field represents an important reference model for the whole world in the developmental process toward a new balance between nature and interaction for the human society located on the deposit. It is important that these consequences arising from mining be thought about and researched in a universal scientific sense so as to control them.
