Ludwig Rommel:
Mansfeld Museum in Hettstedt

Museums - like archives - serve as a collective memory. Thus it is not surprising that quite often they are not set up until a development is coming to an end and there is a danger of testimonies of that development disappearing, be they artefacts or the memories of eyewitnesses and their descendants. The Mansfeld Museum in Hettstedt also owes its existence to the attempt, as a kind of reflex action, to keep hold of something that was about to slip away. It was established in 1985 as works museum of the Mansfeld combine. Of course, it was not possible then to foresee that only five years later the combine would be wound up due to the collapse of the GDR. The article deals with the origins of the Mansfeld Museum in Hettstedt and the stage now reached in its development.
