Ludwig Rommel:
Consumer goods production in the Mansfeld combine

On 30 November 2002 the Mansfeld Museum in Hettstedt opened an exhibition entitled "Consumer goods production in the Mansfeld combine". It met with great interest. Quite a few visitors came not least to see articles which had been produced by this large business wound up in 1990 and in whose manufacture they had themselves been involved over years or even decades as employees of the Mansfeld combine. This peculiar mixture of nostalgia and pride in the achievements of one's own working life is scarcely surprising in a region where, since German reunification in 1989/90, the economic base has largely vanished due to the closure of all copper slate mines and smelting works and a drastic decline in the workforce of all remaining metal-processing plants, with the official unemployment rate constantly at 24 to 25 %.
